Tron: Ares trailer got me actually excited for a modern day Tron film

A character in Tron: Ares in black and red armor stands in front of a black and red light cycle in a wet street.

Listen, I'm going to be real with you, Tron Legacy, to me, was...mid. Don't get me wrong, it had it's moments but, as much as I love watching a movie that focuses on the acting power of Olivia Wilde and Gerrett Hedlund I...well...I...*cough* sorry, I fell asleep while typing that sentence.

It also didn't help that the movie was SO dark. Like, not thematically dark, it was just dark. The entire thing look like it was show in the glow of a night light. Which looks cool in a trailer but when you're forced to live in a dark room for an hour plus, your Circadian Rhythm gets all jacked up and decides it's sleepy time which is probably why I watched this movie twice and still can't really tell you what happened in it other than an awkward Daft Punk cameo and a fun bit where they make fun of how the tech industry releases updates. But for the most part I couldn't even tell you the plot.

But one thing I do remember about Legacy was the end in which Quora follows Sam back into the real world which was wild. It made me hungry for a movie in which the citizens of the Tron world invaded the real world but it just never happened.

Apparently it's happening and I'm hyped. Especially as it actually looks exciting.

There's a part of me that finds a LOT of flaws with this movie. Like, the laser trails off the motorcycles? Listen, I love it. It's iconic and looks incredible. And I'm ACAB enough where I loved watching that cop and his partner getting a divorce. But I'm trying to figure out how the video game physics of the Tron world happen in the real world.

A police car is being split down the middle from the red laser trail of a Tron light cycle

But also, the Recognizer?

I'm going to be real with you, when I saw the Recognizer hovering through the city I got chills. I loved it so much. I love the Recognizer so much. I know the Light Cycles are the ones everyone knows, but I love Trons big guys. I love the Tank, the Recognizer, and especially the Solar Sailer (despite the fact that it always runs in the darkness in a realm that houses no sun).

But the Recognizer simply flies because it's programmed to maintain a certain height and in the Tron digital world that works. You punch in some code and that's that. Tell the Recognizer to maintain a constant it'll do that. But how is that happening in the real world? HOW?! I genuinely want this answered.

A cop runs down a city street as a massive Tron Recognizer hovers down the road after her.

And why are we living in such fear of it? It's a claw machine. The Recognizer's main thing is that it just searches for fugitives and placing them in a holding cell. I...oh.

God damn it.

I just got it while typing this. Not the thing about how the vehicles work but the big thing with the movie. That "there's no going back" line. Oh man.

They aren't invading at all are they? I'm going to bet imaginary monies that the whole thing with this is that a lot of people from the Tron universe have become refugees over here because some baddy in the system is, once again, enslaving everyone, and they all escaped here so they're retrieving those seeking freedom in the real world.

THAT is why there's a Recognizer seemingly chasing down that cop in the image above. Okay, that's kinda dope. Still doesn't explain how the physics work but also, here's the thing, I complain about this sort of thing but also, between you and me, I love this sort of action film. I can put aside my need for explained physics, and put down my beloved copy of Tom Rogers' "Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics" I was given as part of a college course, and just enjoy this sort of thing.

Especially if it gives me super fun moments like the two Light Jets (yes, I know all the vehicles, shut up) using their trails to just create a massive Family Feud X in the sky to block those missiles.

Two Light Jets form a large X in the sky which blocks two missiles from hitting a massive Recognizer ship.

Honestly, I know more and more info is going to trick out as we get closer to the October 10th release date which...oh I get it now, 10.10 (get it guys? it's supposed to look like binary) But I would LOVE to learn more about the science of this world. Unless it's a Matrix thing in which we find out the real world is just another digital layer of the Tron world in which it can go derez itself.
